Chapter 317
There was a high chance that either the array formation prevented that, or the mirror before him was special. For all he knew, there might be some mechanism that could get triggered the moment it was put into a storage artifact.
After all, there were some bizarre artifacts that could not be contained within other artifacts.
And then there was the risk that it might forcefully destroy itself if overwhelming brute force was applied to retrieve the item inside.
Oliver stood before the mirror, looking at his own reflection while thinking about various methods and their possibilities.
It took a while for him, but the majority of his methods had some disadvantage associated with them. In the end, he only had one thing in mind—but that too was purely experimental.
"What if I do this?"
He flicked his wrist, and a rectangular black boundary appeared, fully covering the mirror.
The boundary wiggled slowly, and black light filled everything inside it, eventually enveloping the entire mirror, thus effectively isolating it from the external space and environment.
This was a use of Abyss energy he had learned previously on his way while comprehending the cryptic knowledge from the [Circuit of Abyss]. What it basically did was allow him to completely isolate something.
It was not exactly a new function, but rather something derived from an already existing power. If Abyss energy was raw power, then this technique was something refined—something that used the raw power more efficiently to achieve a specific purpose, reducing the wastage of energy and improving its effectiveness in the end.
The boundary had completely severed the mirror from the surrounding space, appearing as if it was not there despite being right in front of him.
’Now, to store this...’
He looked at the black energy construct before him with calm eyes and gently placed his hand on the energy covering the mirror. Since the mirror with the array formation was now being separated by his Abyss energy, the array did not activate this time.
He lightly grazed over the construct, and with a single thought, the mirror disappeared.
’It succeeded!’ His eyes brightened as he inspected the place where the mirror had previously been.
Instead of his storage bracelet, he had placed the mirror in his mind space.
With Abyss energy isolating the mirror and the mind space being able to store objects, everything was now well within his grasp.
The mind space was like a storage space in the truest sense. It could technically be classified as a separate dimension of sorts that was associated with him.
This was perhaps the reason he was able to successfully put it inside his mind space without it self-destructing or triggering some mechanism.
This had been done purely on an experimental basis. He was reckless and greedy—if things had gone south, he might have harmed his mind severely, sustaining fatal injuries even.
’I need to fix this reckless attitude.’
It was due to his whim that he was in the demon lands in the first place, but thinking of the unexpected gains so far, he felt slightly better.
’But still, is it my luck that I was able to come across such a mysterious object?’ He recalled the luck factor that had improved since last time.
For now, he could only attribute this fortunate encounter to that.
After this, he didn’t linger any more. Quickly stuffing away any valuables, he picked up the woman lying weakly on the bed and carried her downstairs.
____________
The exorcists from before had already started working, picking up items that could be used outside or sold, just like him.
In fact, they were far more meticulous than he was. He had only checked two rooms so far, and they had already scouted multiple places in the mansion, hoarding some decent loot.
Plus, it looked like they knew more about such things than he did and only took the most useful items with them.
After handing over their colleague to the exorcists, he met with their leader one last time.
"The head of the household could return anytime. I suggest you guys leave now. The rest is up to you," he advised.
"We are leaving. By the way, where are... you going?" the man asked a bit hesitantly, not knowing how to address the young boy. His tone remained respectful.
"I have some things to take care of, so I’ll be here a bit longer. Do you guys know how to get out of here?" He was curious if they knew anything.
"Well..." The leader scratched his head and said, "As far as I remember, there is a secret human base located near Leim City, so we were thinking of going there first to assemble and then return to human lands through that."
Oliver nodded keenly. He knew another detail now.
Although he had a general idea about key locations from his memories of the novel, that information came from a time far in the future. He was not even sure if those bases had already been established yet, so he could only rely on others for now.
"Do they have a teleportation array there?" he asked.
"Yes. The coordinates are connected directly to a safe location in human territories. If we can go there, then it would be the safest... however, this is just wistful thinking, haha..." The middle-aged leader sighed and shook his head.
He knew that the distance was considerable from this place and that there was a high probability they would perish before even reaching it.
Yet, it was far better than being confined and tortured in a cell. There was a slim hope that they might make it.
Oliver was silent. He knew this too. Although the exorcists around him looked somewhat relieved, their condition was not much better than when they had been confined in the underground cell.
They were still in a city full of powerful demons. There were guards patrolling everywhere, and even if they escaped the city by some luck, they might get chased by demon beasts along the way.
In a place with very little espera, it was a terrible situation for them.
