“Hello.”
Entering the shop from the back alley as Early had instructed, I found Kalila sitting at a table with her legs up on the table, rather impolitely. She seemed to have been tilting a wooden tankard and drinking something, but a red liquid dripped from the corner of her mouth.
She looked at me with wide eyes, and Kalila took her feet off the table.
“Wh-wh-what is it, suddenly… D-don't be so surprising.”
While looking at Kalila's surprised face, I also looked around. It was a bar-like establishment, not very large, but had a counter as well. It was a little dimly lit, but the atmosphere wasn't unpleasant. A tall, thin man was behind the counter, seemingly mixing drinks.
“This is a nice shop. The atmosphere is calm and I think it's suitable for contemplation. Incidentally, is this shop owned by the Nevis family?”
When I asked, Kalila nodded, although bewildered.
“Ah, yes. We use it as a hideout, and as a bar to make money.”

Without any preamble, I asked directly. Kalila seemed surprised, as she raised the tankard to her mouth again and spurted out a laugh.
“I-I’m not doing anything! Why are you suddenly suspicious?!”
Kalila seemed even more flustered. It was a slightly suspicious, but there was no evidence.
“Is that so? By the way, if you were thinking about a business that isn't a conspiracy, I’d like to hear about that too.”
When I said that, Kalila glanced at the man at the back of the counter and pulled her chin in. She seemed to think for a moment, but immediately turned to me.
“……Well, it's a normal business, right? It's not a conspiracy?”
“Yes, I understand.”
Kalila, who seemed very wary, narrowed her eyes and made this preface before speaking again.
“Now, Fiddiq Academy is having a school festival, so merchants from various countries are coming, right? Kalila clicked her tongue and complained to the man behind the counter. Apparently, his name was Gaia. Gaia shrugged at Kalila and turned to me.
“You’re the teacher, Aoi-sensei, right? I’ve heard rumours.”
“……Yes. Gaia-san, is it?”
I confirmed his name. Gaia looked at me with the eyes of someone who had just seen something interesting.
“Ah, that's fine. The rumours say you're a tyrant, a demon king, a witch… you’ve been given quite the reputation, but meeting you in person is different from what I imagined.”
“……Kalila-san?”
At Gaia’s words, I turned to Kalila. Kalila shook her head violently, as if her neck was going to break.
“No, no, no! I didn’t say that! This Gaia is extremely knowledgeable about the city’s underbelly! He’s probably from another organization!”
Sighing at Kalila's desperate denials, I looked at Gaia.
“So, Gaia-san, you seem to be doing information brokering?”
“That’s right. Incidentally, as for yesterday’s information, I know even small things like which wife had an affair. If you have any information you want to know, just ask.”
Gaia folded his arms and laughed. He was very confident.
“Then, I’ll ask if anything comes up.”
Saying this, I bowed my head, and Gaia nodded slightly and smiled.

Kalila nodded lightly at Gaia's smooth recitation.

Kalila said this cheerfully, but I was amazed by Gaia's information-gathering abilities. After all, Middleton and Ramsay had only arrived this morning. Could it be that he's getting information from the gatekeepers every hour?
